Rs. 6000 Aid Scheme for Pregnant Women

Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana: PM Narendra Modi On 31 December 2016 announced new schemes for poor, senior citizens and women including the Rs. 6000 pregnancy aid scheme. The PMMVY scheme was announced by the Prime Minister as an effort to bring down the maternal mortality rate. Under the scheme, a financial Aid of Rs. 6000 would be provided to pregnant women who undergo institutional delivery for hospital admission.

What is Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana

Matritva Sahyog Yojana is renamed as Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) in the Modi’s regime. Union govt. of India started benefiting pregnant women / lactating mothers by providing them with Rs. 6000 financial aid for upto 2 live birth. All the pregnant women and lactating mothers who have their first pregnancy on or after 1 January 2017 can avail PMMVY scheme benefits subject to certain eligibility criteria. The date and stage of pregnancy for a beneficiary would be counted with respect to her LMP date as mentioned in the MCP card. In case of miscarriage of first child, the women can avail rest of the installments during her future pregnancy. However, a beneficiary is eligible to receive the PM Matru Vandana Yojana benefits only once.

Rs. 6000 Pregnancy Aid Scheme – Objective

The main objective of the Rs. 6000 Pregnancy Aid scheme is to bring down the maternal mortality rate by increasing the number of institutional deliveries across the nation. PMMVY scheme is aimed at encouraging institutional deliveries in order to reduce maternal as well as infant mortality. The scheme would be implemented across all the 650 districts of the country. The financial aid amount of Rs. 6000 will be directly transferred to the saving bank account of pregnant women through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).

17% of all maternal deaths in the world occur in India with maternal mortality rate is pegged at 167 per 100,000 live births, whereas infant mortality is estimated at 43 per 1,000 live births. However, these numbers may not sound too high but when comparing to other nations, these are significant. The primary causes of high maternal and infant mortality rate are inadequate medical care during pregnancy and child birth and poor nutrition. The Rs. 6000 being provided under the scheme also sums up for the vaccination and nutritious food during pregnancy.

The pregnancy aid scheme is being implemented in 53 districts on pilot basis where financial assistance is Rs. 4000. Initially launched in 2010, this was the first scheme under Indira Gandhi Matritva Sahyog Yojana (IGMSY) to provide conditional financial assistance to pregnant women above the age of 18 years for birth of up to 2 live births. In the new scheme, the cash benefit has been increased to Rs. 6000 which will be directly transferred to the bank account of the beneficiary pregnant women.
