CM Vijay launches one-gram gold ring scheme for Tamil Nadu newborns in Madurai

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay launched Thaimaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam at Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai on 28 September 2026. Every eligible baby born in a government hospital gets a one-gram 22-carat gold ring, and babies born from 22 June 2026 are covered.

Who gets the ring

Mother must be a permanent resident of Tamil Nadu, registered under PICME with an RCH ID. At collection, families show an e-KYC verified Aadhaar card plus one more ID or residence proof. Birth order and gender do not matter.

How rings are being given

Babies born from now on get the ring at the hospital before discharge. For babies born between 22 June and 28 September, rings are handed out at 107 hub hospitals, up to 100 babies a day per hub. Village Health Nurses will tell each family its date and time slot. Chengalpattu and Tiruppur districts, home to the Madurantakam and Dharapuram bypoll seats, are left out until the 6 October bypolls.

Procurement details

Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation bought 1,28,499 rings for the first batch from Joyalukkas and Kalyan Jewellers in a 70:30 ratio. Each ring has a unique serial number and tamper-proof packing. The government set aside ₹755.83 crore for about 4,41,667 rings a year. Full details are in the Thaaimaaman Thanga Mothira Thittam post.
