Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana Completes 12 Years

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana started on 28th August 2014 and has been running for 12 years. This scheme is the largest financial inclusion program in the world and has helped many citizens join the formal banking system.

Key achievements as of August 2026 include:

• Over 59 crore bank accounts opened nationwide.
• Total deposits reached 3.17 lakh crore rupees.
• Average deposit per account is 5,356 rupees.
• About 78 per cent of accounts belong to rural or semi-urban areas.
• Women account holders make up 56 per cent of the total.

Financial Inclusion Impact

This scheme helped raise the Financial Inclusion Index of India from 53.9 in 2018 to 67 in 2026. By serving as the base for the JAM trinity, it helps make sure direct and secure payments reach eligible people.
