PM Surya Ghar reaches 5.46 million households with 16,185 MW capacity

PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has reached 54.6 lakh households across India, with a total rooftop solar capacity of 16,185.48 MW as of August 2026. Uttar Pradesh added the most residential rooftop solar power in August with 228.95 MW, followed by Maharashtra at 212.51 MW and Andhra Pradesh at 192.39 MW.

Scheme performance and targets

National residential rooftop installations reached 1,407.32 MW in August. The government has paid ₹28,024 crore in subsidies for this scheme, which started in February 2024 with a budget of ₹75,021 crore. Nearly 19 lakh households have zero electricity bills because of this. The goal is to cover 1 crore households by FY27, with a target of 75 lakh households by December 2026.
