Karnataka government scraps Indira food kits tender to rework scheme

Karnataka government cancelled existing tenders for Indira food kits proposed under Anna Bhagya scheme. Food and civil supplies minister Rizwan Arshad said the program is being restructured. A new version should be ready in 45 days. New tenders will come out after the kit contents and supply chain plans change.

Scheme background

The kits were meant to give 1kg each of tur dal, moong dal, sugar, and salt, plus one litre of cooking oil to families of three to four people. Smaller families were to get half-kg packs. Finance department previously raised concerns about buying and quality, and suggested using e-vouchers for families. Government is now looking at district-level tenders to stop theft. For now, BPL families will keep getting 5kg of rice under Anna Bhagya scheme, along with 5kg from Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana.
