15.36 crore Jan Dhan accounts inoperative, 5.72 crore have zero balance

Finance Ministry data from an RTI reply shows that one in every four accounts under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana is currently inoperative. As of 12 August 2026, there are 15,36,77,009 inoperative accounts and 5,72,35,490 accounts with a zero balance.

Account statistics

Total Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana accounts are over 59 crore, holding more than ₹3.15 lakh crore. Women and transgender individuals hold 32.89 crore accounts, while men hold 26.14 crore.

State-wise distribution

Uttar Pradesh has the highest numbers, with 10.51 crore total accounts, 95.92 lakh zero-balance accounts, and 3.23 crore inoperative accounts. Bihar, West Bengal, and Maharashtra also have high numbers of inactive or zero-balance accounts.
