FASTag KYV: The new Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process for FASTag users has been started officially by the NHAI across India. If you are a vehicle owner then you must now complete KYV verification to keep your FASTag active for toll payments. If you don’t update the FASTag KYV, then your FASTag may be deactivated and you will not be able to pay at any toll plaza.
This step by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is taken to stop misuse of FASTags and make toll collection more transparent and accurate. Although the process has created some confusion among drivers, NHAI has simplified the steps to make it easier for everyone.
What is KYV for FASTag?
KYV stands for Know Your Vehicle. It is a new verification rule started by NHAI to confirm the link between a FASTag and the vehicle it belongs to. Many people were found using one tag for multiple vehicles or keeping tags loose in wallets, which led to wrong toll deductions. The KYV process fixes this issue by correctly linking each FASTag to one vehicle only.

Why KYV is Important
The government found several cases of misuse, such as using car FASTags for trucks to pay less toll or transferring tags between vehicles. FASTag KYV will stop these mistakes and make the toll system cleaner. After verification, each FASTag will be marked as “Active and Verified”, showing it belongs to a single vehicle.
- Stops misuse of tags and prevents multiple-vehicle fraud.
- Makes it easier to track stolen or sold vehicles.
- Reduces wrong toll charges.
- Brings clarity and accuracy in toll collection data.
- Helps create a stronger digital toll network.
Updated Rules for FASTag KYV
According to the latest circular by NHAI‘s arm Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), FASTag services will not be immediately stopped for users who haven’t completed KYV. Instead, they will be given enough time to finish the process. Banks will continue sending reminders through SMS to complete verification.
The rule for uploading photos has also been made easier. Now, only one front photo showing the number plate and FASTag sticker is required. Earlier, both front and side pictures were needed.

Check Status of FASTag & KYV
You can check the status of your FASTag KYV on the bank’s website itself and banks / issuer will also send SMS confirmation about the KVY status.
You can check the status of your FASTag on the official NPCI website to check whether it is active or not.
Go to NPCI FASTag Status Checking Page, enter your vehicle number or FASTag ID, enter captcha code and click Submit to see the status.
You will see your Tag ID, VRN (Vehicle Registration Number), Issuer Bank, Vehicle Class, Action (Status) and Issue Date of your FASTag.
You will also see any inactive previous FASTags where were attached to the same VRN.
Validity of KYV
Once KYV verification is complete, it stays valid until the vehicle is sold or its registration number changes. If ownership changes, the new owner must repeat the KYV process using fresh details and ID proof.
What Happens If You Don’t Complete KYV
If the KYV process is not completed, your FASTag may become inactive even if there is balance in it. Some toll plazas have already started rejecting payments from unverified tags. You may have to pay cash (double the amount) at toll booths until verification is done.
Common Issues and Support
Many users have reported problems while uploading documents or photos. In such cases, banks are required to contact customers and help them finish the KYV process manually. If your issue is not resolved, you can call the official NHAI Helpline at 1033 to register a complaint.
