Himachal Pradesh government has launched the Anti-Chitta Volunteer Scheme to control the rising drug problem in the state. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu made this announcement during the Independence Day celebrations at Sarkaghat in Mandi district. Under this scheme, trained volunteers will act as a bridge between the public and the police. These volunteers will play an active role in creating awareness against chitta (heroin), gathering intelligence, and giving timely confidential information to the authorities. The government will provide incentives for these volunteers in exchange of their service.

This Anti-Chitta volunteer scheme is part of the HP government’s bigger plan to protect the youth from drug abuse. Along with the volunteer scheme, the CM also announced the formation of the Nasha Mukti Roktham and Punarvas Board, which will work on prevention and rehabilitation. The Board will include experts from different government departments, NGOs, and social scientists.

The state government will also form anti-drug committees will be formed at the village and panchayat level. These will include the panchayat secretary, ASHA worker, Anganwadi worker, and a police constable.
