PM Matru Vandana Yojana: ₹5,000 for first child, ₹6,000 for second girl child, how to apply

Under Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY), eligible women get ₹5,000 for the first living child in two instalments. The first payment of ₹3,000 comes after pregnancy registration and at least one antenatal check-up within six months of the last date of menstruation. The second payment of ₹2,000 comes after the child's birth is registered and the child has received all due vaccines up to 14 weeks of age.
For the second child, the scheme pays ₹6,000 in one instalment after birth, but only when the second child is a girl, and registration during pregnancy is compulsory. Women who deliver in a health facility can also get money under Janani Suraksha Yojana, so the total for the first child averages about ₹6,000. Money goes straight to the woman's Aadhaar-seeded bank or post office account through DBT.
PMMVY runs under the Ministry of Women and Child Development as part of Mission Shakti and started on 1 January 2017. It covers pregnant women and lactating mothers aged 18 years and 7 months to 55 years from socially and economically disadvantaged sections. Women in regular employment with the central or state government, with public sector undertakings, or already getting similar maternity benefit under any law cannot apply.
Register at the nearest Anganwadi centre or approved health facility, or apply online at pmmvy.wcd.gov.in. Applications can be made any time up to 270 days after childbirth. Aadhaar details, pregnancy-related information and bank account details are needed. The portal shows approval and payment status, SMS updates go out in 12 languages, and the toll-free helpline is 1515.
A Lok Sabha reply dated 4 April 2025 recorded 67.25 lakh women enrolled in Uttar Pradesh, of whom 61.61 lakh had received payments, with ₹2,734.76 crore disbursed. Nationally, more than four crore women had received maternity benefits as of July 2025.
