Supreme Court Orders Verification of Manipur Relief Claims

Supreme Court directed committee led by former High Court Chief Justice Gita Mittal to check claims that 24,000 families affected by 2023 Manipur ethnic violence still wait for rehabilitation help. Bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant monitors this to make sure people who lost homes and income get support.

Government currently gives Rs 5 lakh for kutcha house and Rs 7 lakh for semi-pucca or pucca house. Also, over 12,000 houses got approval under Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin. Although Rs 51.95 crore reached 885 eligible people, court wants committee to check status of 24,000 families who say they were not covered.

Property and worship site checks

Panel will also check 276 properties and different places of worship to confirm damage and land grabbing claims. Authorities must stop more land grabbing while committee prepares report for court.
