PM Surya Ghar rooftop solar subsidy: ₹30,000 per kW, capped at ₹78,000

Rooftop solar subsidy under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana pays ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the third kW. For 3 kW and above, the central subsidy stays fixed at ₹78,000, however big the system is. Applications are made on the national portal, pmsuryaghar.gov.in.

Only residential rooftops are covered. Commercial and industrial buildings do not qualify, and housing societies apply under separate rules for shared areas. An applicant has to be an Indian citizen who owns the property, must have a valid electricity connection in their own name from the local DISCOM, and must not have taken any other solar subsidy for the home. Panels have to meet Domestic Content Requirement and be listed under ALMM, and the system must be grid-tied. Ministry of New and Renewable Energy runs the scheme, which started in February 2024.

Keep these documents ready: latest electricity bill with consumer number and sanctioned load, Aadhaar, a mobile number linked to Aadhaar, bank details with a cancelled cheque, and proof of ownership or the owner's consent if the house has more than one owner. States and DISCOMs can ask for slightly different papers.

How to apply

  • Go to the portal, open the consumer section and fill name, email, address, state, district and PIN code.
  • Enter personal details and the latest bill, then upload ID proof, ownership proof and the bill.
  • Add bank details and a cancelled cheque. Subsidy is usually paid by DBT, so keep the account linked to Aadhaar.
  • Pick a solar company from the state-wise list on the portal, get a quote and upload the signed agreement.
  • After installation, submit the plant details and apply for a net meter. DISCOM inspection follows, and the commissioning certificate is generated on the portal.
  • Submit bank details again with the commissioning report.

A PIB note dated 1 March 2024 says the subsidy reaches the bank account within 30 days of the commissioning report. As per the news report, homes in Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand and Rajasthan may also get extra state subsidy based on system size, but not every city offers it.
