The Kerala Maritime Board (KMB) has launched an online registration portal (Inland Vessels Portal) for all inland mechanized vessels, including houseboats, in Kerala. The online registration of boats and inland vessels is starting from August 1, 2024. The state government aims to streamline the registration process and enhance the safety of vessels through this portal.
The online registration system has been developed to ensure quick, transparent, and efficient registration of vessels. This move is part of a series of safety measures implemented after the Tanur boat accident.
The new online registration system will also help curb illegal activities in the maritime sector. Kerala is the first state in India to implement such an online registration portal for boats or inland vessels.

Online registrations of boats and inland vessels on the online inland vessel portal will start on 1st August 2024.
Benefits of Boat & Inland Vessels Online Registration Portal
- Unique QR Codes: Vessels registered via the portal will receive a unique QR code. Additionally, another QR code will be issued to passengers and inspection officers. These QR codes provide detailed information about the boat, including its passenger capacity.
- Safety and Compliance: The portal will make it easier to identify and seize illegal vessels. The Kerala Maritime Board plans to deploy speedboats in August 2024 to enforce these regulations.
- Digital Records: Efforts are underway to transfer the registration details of existing vessels to the portal. Annual surveys for these vessels will also be conducted through the system, ensuring up-to-date records and compliance.
Annual Survey Process
Once registered, your vessel will undergo an annual survey to ensure continued compliance with safety regulations. The annual survey process will also be conducted through the online portal. Ensure that all necessary documents and inspection reports are updated and submitted on time.
The Kerala Maritime Board is also working on digitizing other activities in the maritime sector to further enhance safety and transparency. According to KMB Chairman N.S. Pillai, these measures will help eliminate illegal activities and prevent boat accidents.
By adopting this online registration system, Kerala is setting a benchmark in maritime safety and regulation, ensuring a safer and more transparent boating experience for all.
