PM Jan Dhan Yojana crosses 59 crore accounts, called world's largest financial inclusion scheme

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana has crossed 59 crore bank accounts. News On AIR reported the figure on 19 October 2026 and called it the largest financial inclusion scheme in the world. The scheme started in 2014.

Jan Dhan accounts give banking access to households and are the base for direct benefit transfer payments. The report says leakages in welfare delivery were plugged, which saved close to ₹3.5 lakh crore. An account holder can get an overdraft of up to ₹10,000 per household.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke about the scheme at the centenary celebrations of Shri Ram College of Commerce in New Delhi last month. He said almost every family in the country is now connected to the banking system. Scheme details and account opening forms are on the PMJDY official website, and the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana page explains how the scheme works.
