Mizoram Launches Crop Insurance Scheme for Farmers

Mizoram is launching a new crop insurance scheme to help farmers manage money losses from natural disasters, pests, and diseases. Agriculture Minister PC Vanlalruata said this effort connects with the central Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana and runs under the state Bana Kaih scheme.
Coverage and subsidy details
The scheme covers five crops: paddy, ginger, Mizo chilli, cabbage, and brinjal. The rollout happens in phases, starting with districts that have high production potential. The state government provides major premium subsidies to lower the cost for farmers.
Subsidy rates depend on the size of the land holding:
- Farmers with less than 1 hectare pay 10% of the premium, and the state covers 90%.
- Farmers with 1 to 5 hectares receive an 80% subsidy.
- Farmers with land larger than 5 hectares get a 50% contribution.
TATA AIG is the official insurer for this project.
