New Online Excess Luggage Booking Service

From July 31, 2026, Indian Railways is offering an online service to book excess luggage for passengers with confirmed reserved tickets. Eligible passengers can declare and pay for extra bags online while booking or managing their train tickets, so they do not have to visit the parcel office separately.

Passengers who carry excess personal luggage without declaring it can be charged a penalty of up to six times the luggage rate. It is better to book and pay for extra luggage online in advance. The eligible classes and the payment option appear inside the ticket booking process on the official portal.

Proper packing is required so that goods can withstand handling during loading and unloading. Charges are calculated on the basis of distance, weight, and the type of train scale, which is the Luggage scale (L), Rajdhani scale (R), Premier scale (P), or Standard scale (S). The railway issues a Parcel Way Bill (PWB) or Luggage Ticket (LT) that contains a Progressive Reference Record (PRR) number, and this number is used for tracking and delivery.

Parcel Rates and Charges Chart

Parcel freight is calculated on a slab system. Charges depend on the weight of the consignment, with a minimum freight of ₹30 for a minimum chargeable distance of 50 km, plus applicable GST at 5%. Parcels are charged by actual weight or volumetric weight, whichever is higher. Bulky articles above 100 kg or larger than 1.0 m x 1.0 m x 0.7 m are charged at double the normal rate. The maximum acceptable weight on Broad Gauge is 150 kg with dimensions of 2.0 m x 1.5 m x 1.25 m. The online calculator above gives an instant estimate of freight, GST, and the total payable amount.

Delivery and Collection

Parcels usually travel in passenger trains and sometimes in dedicated parcel vans. Once the parcel reaches the destination, the consignee has to produce the original PWB or Luggage Ticket, and an e-way bill if applicable, to collect the goods. Parcels must be collected within the free time allowed, otherwise wharfage charges apply. General parcels can be collected free within 10 working hours at notified stations and within 18 hours at other stations, while heavier items such as vehicles have to be collected within 6 hours.

Why Use Railways for Parcel Services

Indian Railways offers one of the most affordable logistics services in India, with a network that reaches almost every part of the country. The rail network carries almost all commodities, from food grains and medicines to cycles, motorcycles, and cars. Prices are competitive, and the parcel can be tracked at every stage with the PRR number. For passengers travelling with extra bags, the new online excess luggage booking service removes the need to stand in queues at parcel offices. For those who want to check the free luggage allowance and weight limits before packing, the detailed Indian Railways luggage weight and size rules are available on this website.
