Uttar Pradesh Strengthens Legal Protection for Senior Citizens

Uttar Pradesh Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, approved amendments to Uttar Pradesh Parents and Senior Citizens Maintenance and Welfare Rules, 2014 on August 25, 2026. These changes add Rules 22(A), 22(B), and 22(C) to protect elderly people from neglect and abuse.

New protections for senior citizens

Following advice from Seventh State Law Commission, the new rules allow senior citizens to ask for eviction of children or relatives from their property if those people fail to provide care or mistreat them. This change helps elderly parents live with dignity. It strengthens the legal setup created by central Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007. Government has also given Chief Minister power to refine these rules as needed.
