Tragic Death in Malda Linked to Annapurna Yojana Delays
Anita Khatun, 32, died in Malda, West Bengal, on Saturday, August 23, 2026. Local reports state she died by suicide at her home in Gazole. Trinamool Congress claims the death happened because of delays in getting benefits from the Annapurna Bhandar scheme.
Police are looking into reports of family disputes involving the scheme's application process and other home issues. The party says the woman could not get her payments after going to the block office many times. The government states that 1.4 crore women received the monthly cash support of ₹3,000 in August. Officials are currently investigating the death.
