Tamil Nadu Announces Three Free LPG Cylinders for Eligible Families

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay launched a scheme to provide three free LPG cylinders each year to 1.3 crore families. This helps poor families manage the cost of refills, as the central government only provides a subsidy for the first four refills every year.

Data from 2025-2026 shows that 11.4% of the 42 lakh Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries in the state have not bought any refills. By using the database from the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai scheme, the state government wants to fix this gap and help families stop using firewood or kerosene.

Using clean fuel reduces indoor air pollution and lowers the risk of breathing problems, as noted in recent NITI Aayog studies.
