Progress of Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana Over 12 Years

Launched in January 2015, Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana helped bring banking to many people across India. It began with many accounts opened in one week. By August 2026, the total number of accounts reached 59.09 crore, growing from 14.72 crore in 2015. Nearly 46 crore of these accounts are in rural and semi-urban areas, and about 33 crore belong to women.

Benefits and Features

People with these accounts get a RuPay debit card and accident insurance cover of up to two lakh rupees for accounts opened after August 2018. Eligible people can also use an overdraft of up to ten thousand rupees. The scheme works as a way to get money directly from the government. It also connects with other plans like Atal Pension Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana, and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana.

Total deposits have grown to over three lakh sixteen thousand crore rupees. This shows a big change in how people save money.
