Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana Completes 12 Years

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) recently marked 12 years of helping people join the banking system across India. The scheme launched on August 28, 2014, and brought banking to many people who did not have access before. Total accounts now exceed 59 crore. Deposits under this scheme reached Rs 3.17 lakh crore.

Important scheme details

As of August 19, 2026, the average deposit is Rs 5,356 per account. This is 3.4 times higher than when the scheme started. About 78 per cent of these accounts are in rural or semi-urban areas. Also, 56 per cent of accounts belong to women. The government issued 41.29 crore RuPay debit cards. These cards come with accident insurance cover of up to Rs 2 lakh.

Account holders can also use an overdraft facility of up to Rs 10,000. Jan-Dhan-Aadhaar-Mobile links help direct benefit transfers reach eligible people directly without middlemen. The scheme also helps people get insurance and pension coverage through Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana.
