Karnataka accelerates solar rooftop installation on government buildings under PM Surya Ghar Yojana

Karnataka will speed up installation of Solar Rooftop Photovoltaic (SRTPV) systems on government buildings under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, the state energy department said on Monday.

An internal assessment shows close to 59,000 government buildings can take SRTPV, but only 2,624 have systems installed so far.

Energy Minister K J George said solarisation will cut dependence on conventional power and push renewable energy. The scheme will also help lower electricity bills for public institutions, ease peak demand on the state grid and create work for local vendors and technicians.

The department will first take up public buildings with high electricity demand, carry out rooftop assessments and coordinate with the departments running the scheme. Funding will come from central scheme subsidies, budget allocations and private developer partnerships.

Technical surveys will check structural and electrical suitability, and maintenance arrangements will be set up. Monitoring dashboards and periodic audits will measure generation and capture savings.
