Government Boosts Funding for Rural and Tribal Development

Government data from August 13, 2026, shows growth in support for local areas. Fiscal transfers to gram panchayats rose from Rs 2.36 lakh crore under the 15th Finance Commission to Rs 4.35 lakh crore for the 16th Finance Commission. Rural development budgets also increased three times, reaching Rs 2.73 lakh crore for 2026-27. Tribal affairs funding reached Rs 15,421.97 crore.

Better access to basic services

Basic services are reaching more families now. Under Jal Jeevan Mission, tap water coverage reached 15.91 crore households by August 12, 2026. Har Ghar Jal campaign provided full coverage in 2.89 lakh villages. Also, 12.19 crore toilets were built under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan-Grameen. Housing for the poor remains important, with 3.91 crore houses approved under PMAY-G. Education results for girls are improving, as the enrolment ratio for classes 9-10 reached 83.4 percent in 2025-26.
