Fisheries Department Celebrates 80th Independence Day and Blue Economy Growth

Department of Fisheries marked 80th Independence Day on 15 August 2026 in New Delhi. This event celebrated the nation's progress and focused on 150 Years of Vande Mataram and Yuva Shakti for Viksit Bharat 2047. India is now the world's second-largest fish producer and contributes 8% to the global output.

Fisheries sector growth

Since 2015, the government has invested ₹39,272 crore into the sector through schemes like Blue Revolution Scheme and Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana. Five beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Matsya Kisan Samridhi Sah-Yojana were honored at Rashtrapati Bhavan for their work in the industry. These individuals show how government support helps modernize aquaculture and improves income for over 3 crore fishers across the country.
