AI Integration for Rural Road Maintenance Under PMGSY

Ministry of Rural Development now uses AI to check rural road quality. By updating the e-MARG system, officials will use GPS-enabled dashcams to track road conditions instead of manual checks. This focus puts maintenance of current roads above building new ones.

Rural road maintenance updates

Government has allocated ₹18,907 crore for the 2026-27 year for Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana. AI will sort roads as good, fair, or poor using video footage. This change helps increase the life of over 800,000 kilometers of rural roads.

For now, human checks will run with the AI system to make sure it works well. Better roads help farmers reach markets and improve access to services like healthcare.
