Ahmedabad Airport to Sabarmati Riverfront Tunnel Project Gets Preliminary Approval

Ahmedabad infrastructure project to build a tunnel between Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport and Sabarmati Riverfront is moving forward. On August 20, 2026, Urban Development Department gave preliminary approval for the route under Hansol Town Planning Scheme No. 67.

This project was stalled for three years because of a pending no-objection certificate from the Army. Although this approval clears the 24-metre approach road near Ummed hotel, final Army clearance is still required to start construction. The tunnel will connect the airport statue area to the eastern bank of the riverfront, eventually linking to Sardar Patel Sports Enclave.

Project next steps

Officials are fast-tracking this to prepare for 2030 Commonwealth Games and possible 2036 Olympic bids. Design finalisation and technical checks can now start, but the project timeline depends on future permissions and funding.
