Central government has hiked assistance under Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme 2020. Just after resuming his office, PM Narendra Modi has signed the first file of increasing rates of PM Scholarship Scheme (PMSS) for both girls & boys. Cabinet has given its approval for a major change in the PM Scholarship Yojana under the National Defence Fund.

Under the PM Scholarship Scheme (PMSS), the children of martyr policemen receive assistance from the Indian government on a monthly basis. Now all the boys children would get Rs. 2500 scholarship per month (earlier Rs. 2000). Accordingly, the girls children would now get scholarship of Rs. 3,000 per month (earlier Rs. 2250).

This information is authentic as PM Narendra Damodardas Modi has provided this info. on his official twitter handle. It was the first decision by PM Narendra Modi after taking charge at the Prime Minister’s Office in South Block.

Prime Minister Scholarship Scheme Assistance Raised

The first cabinet meeting of second tenure of Modi government has taken a very important decision for the welfare of families of martyred policemen. Union govt. is committed towards the welfare of the defence personnels and to enable them to lead a life of dignity as 1 member of their family has sacrificed his / her life for the country. Now the children of martyr policemen (died in terrorist, maoist attack) will get an increased amount of scholarship.

On assuming office, the first decision that PM Narendra Modi took is approval to a major change in the Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme under the National Defence Fund. The rates of scholarship have been increased from Rs 2,000 per month to Rs 2,500 per month for boys and from Rs 2,250 per month to Rs 3,000 per month for girls.

Major Changes in PM Scholarship Yojana 2020 Approved

The other changes made under PM Scholarship Yojana are as follows:-

  • The scope of PM scholarship scheme is extended to the wards of state police officials who are / were martyred during terrorists or naxal attacks.
  • The quota of new scholarships for wards of state police officials would be 500 in a single year. The Ministry of Home Affairs will be the nodal ministry in this regard.
  • Previously, the children of martyrs like Tukaram Omble (killed during Mumbai terror attack) were not eligible for scholarship under PMSS scheme. This new move will remove this anomaly and help families of all those deceased while fighting terror/naxals in state police forces.

The changes under PM Scholarship Yojana 2019-20 comes in line with the PM’s vision for India’s safety, security and the well-being of those who protect the nation.

National Defence Fund for PM’s Scholarship Scheme 2020

National Defence Fund (NDF) was set up in FY 1962 to take charge of the voluntary donations in cash and kind received for promotion of the national defense effort and to decide on their utilization. NDF is currently used for the welfare of the members of the armed forces, paramilitary forces and Railway Protection Force (RPF) and their dependents.

The Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme (PMSS) is now being being implemented to encourage technical and post-graduate education for widows and wards of the deceased/ex-service personnel of armed forces and paramilitary forces and RPF. Under PMSS, every year new scholarships are given to 5,500 wards of armed forces, 2,000 wards of paramilitary forces and for 150 wards of RPF.
